- Art Show - The Memphis YMCA Community Action Program (Y-CAP) presents “Welcome to Our Neighborhood,” an art show featuring paintings and other artwork by the program’s participants. The paintings will be on display May 2 from 5 p.m. to 7 p.m. at Otherland’s Coffee Bar at 641 S. Cooper St. The event is free and open to the public. Refreshments will be served. Y-CAP includes weekly art therapy sessions, and during a recent project participants were guided to photograph buildings and landscapes in their neighborhoods and create paintings from the photographs to foster a sense of responsibility to the community. These projects will be displayed at the upcoming Art Show. Art therapy combines psychological counseling with the creation of visual art to help people of all ages increase self-esteem, improve behavior, solve conflicts and develop social skills. In addition to paintings, the art show will also display other projects created by Y-CAP youth. For more information, contact Y-CAP senior program director Shauna Bateman, at (901) 458-9622.
